Reds Review:

I’ve had the honor of following Luna Lopez from the beginning. Starting with her debut novella, First Kiss. Her debut was just a taste of the spectacular writing she has unleashed with her new full length novel, Where My Heart Lies.

Blogging has given me the opportunity to step outside of my self-imposed reading boundaries. Luna’s stories of lesbian relationships have introduced me to a romance genre I would never have searched out on my own. Continue reading “Reds Review: Where My Heart Lies by Luna Lopez”

Reds Review: First Kiss by Luna Lopez

What happens if taking that first kiss ruins everything they have? What if that first kiss makes everything better?

First Kiss: A Lesbian Short StoryFirst Kiss: A Lesbian Short Story by Luna Lopez

Have you ever started reading a book just knowing in your heart how the story will end?
Well, you might not get the outcome you expected when reading First Kiss. I know I didnโ€™t.

Luna Lopez has written a sweet short story that touched my heart and made me think about love.

First Kiss is a story of two women but let’s back up. It’s a story of two people. Two people who have been friends for a long time and now see their friendship could be more. That’s a pretty risky thing to do regardless of their gender.

What happens if taking that first kiss ruins everything they have?
What if it ends the special connection which has grown over the years?
What if that first kiss makes everything better?
Does the fact these two people are women create other complications?

Will there be acceptance or rejection? First they must accept or reject the idea of more than friends themselves. How will their decision be accepted or rejected by family and friends?

Is the risk of losing it all worth taking a chance on love?

These were the questions and thoughts running through my mind while reading and even after I closed the book. I thought about how Ms. Lopez told this story and all of the ways it could have ended. I looked inside myself and tried to see all sides of this story. Like I said at the start, it touched my heart.

No spoilers in my review. You will have to read it yourself to find out more.

I am looking forward to reading Ms. Lopez’s debut novel, Where the Heart Lies.

They say your first kiss should be earned.

Mine was stolen by a devil in a masquerade mask under the black Chicago sky.

They say the vows you take on your wedding day are sacred.

Mine were broken before we left church.

They say your heart only beats for one man.

Mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end.

I was promised to Angelo Bandini, the heir to one of the most powerful families in the Chicago Outfit.

Then taken by Senator Wolfe Keaton, who held my fatherโ€™s sins over his head to force me into marriage.

They say that all great love stories have a happy ending.

I, Francesca Rossi, found myself erasing and rewriting mine until the very last chapter.

One kiss.

Two men.

Three lives.

Entwined together.

And somewhere between these two men, I had to find my forever.

โ€œAre you sure youโ€™re on my card?โ€ I turned to the man with a polite yet distant smile. I was still disoriented from the exchange with Angelo when the stranger pulled me against his hard body and pressed a possessive hand lower than socially acceptable on my back, a second from groping my butt.

โ€œAnswer me,โ€ I hissed.

โ€œMy bid on your card was the highest,โ€ he replied dryly.

โ€œThe bids are undisclosed. You donโ€™t know how much other people have paid,โ€ I kept my lips pursed to keep myself from yelling.

โ€œI know itโ€™s nowhere near the realm of what this dance is worth.โ€

We began to waltz around the room as other couples were not only spinning and mingling but also stealing envious glances at us. Naked, raw ogles that told me that whomever the blonde heโ€™d come to the masquerade with was, she wasnโ€™t his wife. And that I might have been all the rage in The Outfit, but the rude man was in high demand, too.

I was stiff and cold in his arms, but he didnโ€™t seem to noticeโ€”or mind. He knew how to waltz better than most men, but he was technical, and lacked warmth and Angeloโ€™s playfulness.

โ€œNemesis.โ€ He took me by surprise, his rapacious gaze stripping me bare. โ€œDistributing glee and dealing misery. Seems at odds with the submissive girl who entertained Bishop and his horsey wife at the table.โ€

I choked on my own saliva. Did he just call the governorโ€™s wife horsey? And me submissive? I looked away, ignoring the addictive scent of his cologne, and the way his marble body felt against mine.

โ€œNemesis is my spirit animal. She was the one to lure Narcissus to a pool where he saw his own reflection and died of vanity. Pride is a terrible illness.โ€ I flashed him a taunting smirk.

โ€œSome of us could use catching it.โ€ He bared his straight white teeth.

โ€œArrogance is a disease. Compassion is the cure. Most gods didnโ€™t like Nemesis, but thatโ€™s because she had a backbone.โ€

โ€œDo you?โ€ He arched a dark eyebrow.

โ€œDo Iโ€ฆ?โ€ I blinked, the courteous grin on my face crumpling. He was even ruder when we were alone.

โ€œHave a backbone,โ€ he provided. He stared at me so boldly and intimately, it felt like he breathed fire into my soul. I wanted to step out of his touch and jump into a pool full of ice.

โ€œOf course, I do,โ€ I responded, my spine stiffening. โ€œWhatโ€™s with the manners? Were you raised by wild coyotes?โ€

โ€œGive me an example,โ€ he said, ignoring my quip. I was beginning to draw away from him, but he jerked me back into his arms. The glitzy ballroom distorted into a backdrop, and even though I was starting to notice that the man behind the demi-mask was unusually beautiful, the ugliness of his behavior was the only thing that stood out.

I am a warrior and a ladyโ€ฆand a sane person who can deal with this horrid man.

โ€œI really like Angelo Bandini.โ€ I dropped my voice, slicing my gaze from his eyes and toward the table where Angeloโ€™s family had been seated. My father was sitting a few seats away, staring at us coldly, surrounded by Made Men who chatted away.

โ€œAnd see, in my family, we have a tradition dating back ten generations. Prior to her wedding, a Rossi bride is to open a wooden chestโ€”carved and made by a witch who lived in my ancestorsโ€™ Italian villageโ€”and read three notes written to her by the last Rossi girl to marry. Itโ€™s kind of a good luck charm mixed with a talisman and a bit of fortunetelling. I stole the chest tonight and opened one of the notes, all so I could rush fate. It said that tonight I was going to be kissed by the love of my life, and wellโ€ฆโ€ I drew my lower lip into my mouth and sucked it, peering under my eyelashes at Angeloโ€™s empty seat. The man stared at me stoically, as though I was a foreign film he couldnโ€™t understand. โ€œIโ€™m going to kiss him tonight.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s your backbone?โ€

โ€œWhen I have an ambition, I go for it.โ€

A conceited frown crinkled his mask, as if to say I was a complete and utter moron. I looked him straight in the eye. My father taught me that the best way to deal with men like him was to confront, not run. Because, this man? Heโ€™d chase.

Red’s Author Chit Chat with Kimberley O’Malley

Thanks Ms. Kimberley O’Malley for being a good sport and letting me test out my interviewing skills on you. Like I said the Redhead does things her way. I hope you and everyone reading learned a little bit about you and smiled a lot.

Hi Kim. I feel like we are old friends so I hope its ok to call you Kim. Thank you for agreeing to chat with me today. You are my first author interview so please be patient. Most of my members know that I am the crazy redhead with nothing but the best of intentions. With that said I have no idea what I am doing. I am just making it up as I go along.

Let’s get started. I see that you currently write contemporary but may branch out to other genres. That sounds like a lot of fun to stretch your creative mind.

So I am going through the interview form I asked you to fill out and I am blown away. When did you figure out time travel? I see you started writing in 2092. Is this a secret or can you share your travel plans with us? I would love to be able to see what the future holds, like get the lotto numbers and…..

Oh, that was a typo. I feel so silly. OK, So you started writing in 2002. Although that’s not quiet as exciting as the time travel spin it is still very interesting.

1) Do you have a favorite book that you have written?

Kim: Coming Home is my first and favorite because I wrote in 2002 while waiting to adopt our daughter from Russia. It saved my sanity.
2) How about a favorite character from your books?

Kim: I really like all my characters. They’re like my children in a way. I love Katie from Taking Chances. You would too. She’s a feisty red head!

A feisty red head? You are a genius.

3) Do you have a specific way you choose the characters names?

Kim: I use names that I like. Ones I hear and think I’ll use that…

Ever consider using Red??? Just asking for a friend.ย

4) What is your favorite part of being a published author?

Kim: When a stranger tells me they’ve read my book. I write because I have stories to tell. The fact that someone not related to me chooses to read them? That blows my mind.

5) Where is the strangest place you had a book or character idea come to you?

Kim: Not so much a strange place as time. I’m wrapping up my first series this year and starting the next one in 2019. Then a friend mentioned wanting to write a cozy mystery…and I’m off!

6) I am sure you dont sit with a timer but if you had to guess how long does it take for you to write a book?ย

Kim: Not really sure.. 15 years for the first one. I’m getting better! I’ve released 4 in 13 months!

You are on a roll! Go Kim! Go Kim!

7) Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?

Kim: I read everything, even though they say not to. They are what they are. I try to learn from bad ones. I treasure the good ones!!

8) What do you do what you suffer from writerโ€™s block?

Kim: Hasn’t happened thankfully. My issue is more about never having enough time.

Crap, I hope I didn’t jinx you. No writers block, no writers block. There that should work.ย

9) Which of your books do you wish more readers were aware of?

Kim: All. Of. Them!ย

10) Did you have a mentor when you started?

Kim: Yes’m the lovely Jeni Burns, who is now my editor.

Shout out to Jeni Burns!!!

11) What advice would you give an aspiring author?

Kim:ย Write the book! Don’t give into self-doubt. Just write it. Then spend the money wisely. Use an editor. Have a cover designed.

12) What can we expect from you in the future?

Kim: Book 5 in my series will be released this fall

The Crowd goes wild!!!!

13) Tell us something fun. Anything that can make us smile or giggle. Life is too short, lets spread some smiles around.

Kim: I’m obsessed with Candy Crush!

Ok, just a thought, if you are looking for some more time to write delete Candy Crush from your phone. I am just looking out for your fans that don’t want to wait for your new books. xoxo

Anything else you would like to share?

Kim: Thank you for this fabulous opportunity!!!

Thanks Ms. Kimberley O’Malley for being a good sport and letting me test out my interviewing skills on you. Like I said the Redhead does things her way. I hope you and everyone reading learned a little bit about you and smiled a lot.

~Red xoxo

Oh and heres some more good stuff. Kim’s first book and a little bit about her.

Red’s Author Chit Chat with Isobelle Cate

I wish readers were more aware of the Second Chances series – my steamy contemporary romance series.

Today we are here with Isobelle Cate. Thanks for stopping by to chat. Let’s get starts.

1) Tell us what genre you write and when did you start writing.

Isobelle: Paranormal and Contemporary Romance. I began writing when I was still in high school but became a published writer in 2013

2) Do you have a favorite book that you have written?

Isobelle: Gosh this is a tough one. Ha! Paranormal, I’d probably say My Haven, My Midnight (Book 5 of the Cynn Cruor Bloodline series), and Take all of Me (Book 3 of the Second Chances series). They’re my favorites because the characters are placed through the wringer. It’s about sacrifices, and secrets that can make or break a relationship and the protagonists have to go through inner and outer conflicts and come out stronger than they were before.

Red: Those sound amazing. Reds review team have read several of these. Their reviews will be listed at the bottom of this interview.

3) How about a favorite character from your books? Do you have a specific way you choose the characters names?

Isobelle: Female character would probably be Amaryllis Hart from My Have, My Midnight. Male character would probably be Zac McBain from Midnight’s Fate (his story isn’t over yet! ๐Ÿ˜‰ As for their names, I look for the oldest Scottish male and female names since my paranormal romances involve vampire/wolfen hybrids who trace their origins in Scotland. At times, the names just come to me full-blown like Amaryllis’ or Eirene Spence’s name. Eirene is the heroine from Rapture at Midnight.

Red: Eirene is so original. I don’t think I have ever seen it on a book I have read before.

4) What is your favorite part of being a published author?

Isobelle: That I’m able to write stories that readers will love and get to engage with readers when I can.

Red: It must be amazing to see your words come together and then have other read it.

5) Where is the strangest place you had a book or character idea come to you? Continue reading “Red’s Author Chit Chat with Isobelle Cate”

The Playbook

The Playbook by Maggie Jane Schuler
Reds Review

The Playbook picks up right where Up to Bat ended. We were left wondering what will happen with Sam. All of the questions you asked and waited anxiously to know the answers to are revealed but not everything will be as you expect. Maggie Jane Schuler does an amazing job of keeping the readers on their toes in this romantic suspense filled book.

I fell in love with Blake and Sam while reading book 1. I can relate to Sam’s innocence and instant love for Blake. My whole heart wants them to find their HEA. Their whirlwind romance compounded by the stress and drama surrounding the pair made me read on and on into the night just waiting to see who is responsible for the chaos. Who is causing the problems which seems to be following Sam where ever she goes?

My favorite part of this entire series is the relationship Sam has with her late brother, Mitch. Mitch was killed on 9/11 but he is still a strong presence in Sam’s life. Their time around the baseball field in Sam’s dreams aids in painting the picture the author is laying before you. The admiration Sam has for her big brother shines through even the darkest times. His guidance in those dreams helps piece together the story and understand Sam’s way of thinking.

I have no doubt the desire to solve the puzzle within this book will keep you turning pages.

Amazing ending to The Diamond Series. I can’t wait to read more from Maggie Jane Schuler.
