Red’s Author Chit Chat with Kristine Raymond

Write what’s in your heart. Learn as much as you can about every aspect of the process, but make sure your words are authentically yours.

Hi Kristine, Thank you for letting me interview you today. I love finding new to me authors and sharing them with others. Let’s get started.

1) What Genre do you write?

Kristine: Romance, both historical western and contemporary, for now…..

2) When did you start Writing?

Kristine: Labor Day weekend 2013. A momentous step into this journey I find myself on.

Red: I love that you call it a journey.

3) Do you have a favorite book that you have written?

Kristine: Whichever I’m writing at the time because it’s all shiny and new …lol. Seriously, though, I don’t think I can pick a favorite. I love all of my books for different reasons – some due to the stories themselves and others for the emotions I felt while writing them.

4) How about a favorite character from your books? Do you have a specific way you choose the characters names?

Kristine: This question I can answer with a ‘yes’. Jack Tanner from Hearts on Fire (and the rest of the Hidden Springs series) is my favorite. There’s just something about his personality that I fell in love with the moment I created it, and I haven’t written one to match his since.

As far as coming up with names for my characters, that happens in a variety of ways. Some are family names, some I choose by looking in the phone book (yes, I still have one of those lying around), some randomly pop into my head, and sometimes I refer to the lists and lists of baby names I have saved on my computer.”

Red: I never thought to look at baby names for suggestions.

5) What is your favorite part of being a published author?

Kristine: Sharing my stories with the world and when readers love the same parts of my stories that I do.

6) Where is the strangest place you had a book or character idea come to you?

Kristine: Strangest? I don’t know. A lot of scenes are written in my head while I’m mowing my lawn. Spending an hour on a riding mower has a way of clarifying things for me – though I’m out of luck in the winter. I’ve had scenes and characters come to me in dreams. That’s always neat – to wake up and know what happens next.

Red: I can picture you on a riding mower with a pad of paper on the steering wheel taking notes lol.

7)  I am sure you don’t sit with a timer but if you had to guess how long does it take for you to write a book?

Kristine: It depends on the story. Tempted took me four years to write, though I wasn’t working on it the entire time. Snowflakes in Winter, from the Seasons of Love collection, took me five days. I guess I’d say, on average, two months. That’s without writing every day. When my characters decide to stop speaking to me (which happens all of the time. I don’t know why. I’m a delight to be around), it can take a week or more for them to cozy up to me again.

8) Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?

Kristine: Not so much any more. I used to obsess over them before realizing that regardless if they’re good or bad, I can’t do anything about them. A review is one person’s opinion based on their personal viewpoints and experiences and while I always hope they enjoy my story, that they ‘get’ what I’m trying to say, not everyone is going to like the plot or the characters or my style of writing.

9) What do you do what you suffer from writer’s block?

Kristine: Cry. No, not really, but when my imaginary friends stop speaking to me my feelings do get hurt a little bit. Being unable to fashion together words in a meaningful way when I have a story to tell is frustrating, but I’ve found that trying to force them out doesn’t work for me. So, I take a step back, work on a project that isn’t book related, and wait for the words and my brain to sync up.

Red: I’ve had a lot of authors agree that stepping away can reset your brain. Makes sense.

10) Which of your books do you wish more readers were aware of?

Kristine: All of them. I know that sounds like a pat answer, but it’s true. I’ve written over a dozen books encompassing four different genres. That’s a lot of variety for a reader to choose from. Any and all are a good pick!

Red: Let’s hope this chit chat will bring some new readers your way!

11) Did you have a mentor when you started?

Kristine: Several. Laramie Briscoe showed me the ropes – what I needed in order to self-publish (cover designer, formatter, etc.) and she answered my endless questions. LL Collins came to my rescue when I was uploading Here to Stay to Amazon. It’s amazing how scary that is the first time you do it. And there have been numerous others who’ve helped me along the way and continue to help me. That’s what I love about this journey. Though writing is a solitary endeavor, there is an awesome community – authors, bloggers, readers, designers, formatters, editors, betas – just outside the door, so to speak, offering help and encouragement. I don’t think there’s a single one of us who does this alone.

Red: Thank you for the shout out to all of the people it takes to raise a book baby.

12) What advice would you give an aspiring author?

Kristine: Write what’s in your heart. Learn as much as you can about every aspect of the process, but make sure your words are authentically yours. Write your book. It’s okay to be scared but do it anyway. Write what comes from your soul, not what you think people want. Soak up every bit of advice you can, and then do it your way. It’s okay to not follow the crowd; to go off in a different direction. It’s okay to try new things. If it doesn’t work, try something else. Never stop learning. And never stop writing.

Red: Truth!

13) Tell us something fun. Anything that can make us smile or giggle. Life is too short, lets spread some smiles around.

Kristine: I want to be Betty White when I grow up.

Red: BEST ANSWER EVER!!

14) Anything Else

Kristine: Just, thank you. Thanks for helping out authors like me, for taking time out of your life to share about our books. I appreciate it more than you know. Thanks for the interview, Red. It’s been lots of fun being here.

Thank you so much Kristine. Having you here with us has been great!

~Red xoxo

Enduring Traditions: A Hidden Springs Novella by Kristine Raymond

Amazon https://amzn.to/2FjamJs

It’s the turn of the century and progress has made its way to Hidden Springs.

Leaving his hometown two decades earlier to become a physician, Micah Tanner has returned, eager to educate folks in the ways of modern medicine. However, what sounds like an easy task is anything but when he discovers his neighbors prefer seeking help from the local medicine woman instead of sending for the doctor when they’re ill. Determined to put an end to her ancient customs, he’s unprepared for the effect she has on his heart.

**This is the final book in the Hidden Springs series

Tel-e-ka, or Ellie as she’s known to the townsfolk, is a young Yavapai medicine woman struggling to find a balance between the old ways of her ancestors and the new advances in the field of healing. It doesn’t help that the new doctor thinks herbal remedies are a thing of the past and has no problem telling her so, or that she finds herself attracted to him. A medical emergency outside the scope of her experience changes how she views her own beliefs – and his.

When age-old traditions meet modern-day practices, the sparks that fly rival those of the town’s New Year’s celebration. Can a couple from two different backgrounds share a love as enduring as their traditions?

About Kristine Raymond

Kristine Raymond didn’t figure out what she wanted to be when she grew up until later in life. If you haven’t guessed, it’s being an author. Since writing and publishing her first book in 2013, she’s gone on to complete two romance series – one historical western and one contemporary – write an anecdotal, non-fiction short about her first year as an indie author, and try her hand at contemporary erotic drama. When she’s not writing, she’s learning how to navigate the publishing and promotional side of the business. When she’s not doing that, she enjoys spending time with her husband and furry family, reading, gardening, and binge-watching shows on Netflix.

Men of Inked: Southside by Chelle Bliss

Lucio Gallo isn’t like most men, though. He’s fiercely protective, loyal, and did I mention he’s covered in nothing but muscle?
Above all else, he’s everything I need but never knew I wanted.

How did I miss this series? I have read all of Chelle Bliss’s Men of Inked books but this one slipped by me. It’s one of the victims of being a blogger. You just don’t read as much as I used to. I am working on balancing that. I mean after all, I started blogging because I love reading. So, I just one clicked each of these and put them way up on my TBR.

This isn’t how fairy tales typically begin, but it’s where mine starts…
No money, no phone, and abandoned on the streets of Chicago.
With my baby in my arms, I wander into a bar in a shady neighborhood and ask to use their phone.
When my father turns us away and completely disowns me, the bar owner, and total hottie, offers us a place to stay…no strings attached.
I’m leery at first.
Hot alpha guy.
Down on her luck single mother.
I mean, who wouldn’t be wary?

Reds Reviews and Recommendations

A few recommendations from the books I’ve reviewed recently.

I have been a reading and reviewing queen lately. Even taking the time to go back and make sure I have reviewed on Amazon, Goodreads and Bookbub. I found a few I flat-out forgot to review. Here are a few recommendations from the books I’ve reviewed recently. These reviews are by The Redhead.

*Due to the adult content in these books they are for 18+ readers only.

KickKick by Ali Dean
Amazon https://amzn.to/2QM2YHi

Kick and Jack stole my heart. Ali Dean writes a sexy story about Kick the wild college girl trying to figure out what she wants with her life and Jack who is more down to earth than most up and coming rock stars. It works. Jacks devotion to Kick made my heart swell up with happiness. So often you read a rock star book and it’s all about the hook up with groupies. I loved that Jack is not like that. The controversy in this book was difficult to read about but was an honest representation of how it could happen. I respect how the author did not turn Kick in a victim who couldn’t overcome her emotional battle.
Jack and Kick are an amazing couple. When a book leaves me wanting to know how a couple’s story will continue you know they hooked you.

Delicious: A Sexy Foodie RomanceDelicious: A Sexy Foodie Romance by Marci Belle

Amazon https://amzn.to/2RJ6h35

2 of my favorite things, food and sex. OK 3, hot man! Marci Belle starts eases us into the mind of Evie the food critic. How she meets the one man she should have never met, let a lone fall for. Reading this story kept me looking for more about each of these main characters. Great quick read and definitely left me wanting to see what else this author has for me in the future.

Ménage à MoiMénage à Moi by James Crow

Amazon https://amzn.to/2A4WAW7

Story within a story within a HOT STORY

James Crow has succeeded in writing the modern woman’s dirty fantasies. Jamie is like many erotica readers that devour books then seek relief. Sometimes not even waiting for the end. Then she makes sure to go back to the sexy parts as needed for her pleasure. Who would ever think that her fantasies could become realities? It’s too far-fetched to happen right?

Shot on Goal: Seattle Sockeyes Hockey (Game On in Seattle Book 11)Shot on Goal: Seattle Sockeyes Hockey by Jami Davenport

Amazon https://amzn.to/2ISUxqE

Nothing stops love

This story warmed my heart.  A relationship that should never happen can’t be stopped when sparks fly between Drew and Marina. Their story kept me turning the pages looking for the HEA I love. If you love Sports Rom you have to read Jami Davenport’s books! Hockey and Football players to drool over.

Pillow TalkPillow Talk by Luke Prescott

Amazon https://amzn.to/2IQtHzM

Loved it! I liked how the story unfolded and became intertwined in such a way I didn’t want to stop. I needed to find out what happens next.
I’ve recently become obsessed with male authors. I guess it’s hearing how their brains process the things we women see and feel into their words. Luke does an amazing job with his words.
Can you imagine being paid to seduce a man just to find out his business secrets? Brooke is a girl I would love to sit down with and listen to all of those secrets.

Red’s Author Chit Chat with Marsha Black

I love gaining new fans and being able to talk and interact with them.

Hi Marsha, Thank you for stopping in so we can get to know you better. You said your genre is more Young Adult but that your anthology stories might not be suitable for the average YA reader. Maybe for a more mature audience. That is great to know. Congratulations on your first book, The Triplet’s Curse – Hope’s Story: Book One. I can’t wait for you to tell us more about you and your books.

1) Do you have a favorite character from The Triplet’s Curse?

Marsha: I really enjoy Hope. She reminds me of how I was when I was a teenager and I had so much fun writing her story.

Red: How interesting to get a peek into your teen years while reading this book.

2) What is your favorite part of being a published author?

Marsha: I love gaining new fans and being able to talk and interact with them.

Red: Fangirling is a real thing. Trust me, just doing this interview with you I have to control myself. Authors are superstars in out world.

3) Where is the strangest place you had a book or character idea come to you?

Marsha: I had a series idea come to me on the way to the dentist, lol. I thought that was quite funny.

Red: I ask this question of each author and I have to say that this a first for the idea box.

4) I am sure you don’t sit with a timer but if you had to guess how long does it take for you to write a book?

Marsha: This completely varies, I work full-time, taking online college courses and have a toddler, so with the help of my boyfriend I get writing done, but it’s not every day and not always a lot at a time.

Red: Sounds like me when I am trying to clean house. Writing is much more fun than cleaning up after a toddler.

5) Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?

Marsha: I do read them. Thankfully I’ve only had good reviews, but I wouldn’t mind bad as long as there’s a reason why. I don’t see the point in giving a book one or two stars, but not explaining or contacting me about what you didn’t like about the book. I want to make my book an enjoyable read, and I can’t do that if I don’t know where mistakes are being made.

Red: Very well said. The star rating system is severely flawed in my opinion. Here at The Redhead’s Book Blog we don’t use stars. The written content in a review is what is important in determining the opinion of the reviewer. Ok, I am off my soapbox now. As you can see this is something I have put a lot of thought into.

6) What do you do when you suffer from writer’s block?

Marsha: I have thankfully not had to suffer through writer’s block as of yet.

7) Which of your books do you wish more readers were aware of?

Marsha: I currently have The Triplet’s Curse – Hope’s Story released. A novella in Dark Waters: A Mermaid Anthology and The Triplet’s Curse – Destiny’s Story(Book Two) rereleased Aug 2018.

Red: You have been busy.

8) Did you have a mentor when you started?

Marsha: I did not. I was a reader and participated in Facebook events before starting back writing.

9) What advice would you give an aspiring author?

Marsha: Go for it. It can be scary and nerve-wracking. You may worry about if anyone might like your story or not. The best thing I can say is…do it for you. There will be people who like it and people who don’t. If you enjoy writing the story and it’s something that you would read, then more power to you. Have faith in yourself. Even if you’re book isn’t well liked, you accomplished a goal in writing a book, and there are people out there who would be willing to help make it better by working with you on it. So never despair.

Red: That is awesome advice. I had some tell me to carry a notepad and if I felt like writing a few sentences to do it. It’s fun to go back a look at those little bits from months ago.

10) What can we expect from you in the future?

42 & Beyond: A Space Opera Anthology is available for preorder and is releasing Oct 12, 2018. I’ll be working on the 3rd book of the trilogy. Fingers crossed I’ll get it released by the end of the year. I do have about 4 or 5 other anthologies I’ll be part of this year, all of varying genres and story lines. I have a YA Fantasy stand alone I will be working on as well as a series I’m hoping to start next year.

11) Anything Else

About Marsha Black

Mother of 2, avid reader, lover of anything and everything paranormal/supernatural. Enjoys reading, watching TV, and hanging out with her kids. Hopes that through her written books, readers can escape from reality, as many books did for her. Writes clean YA/NA, with some toe-dipping in other genres. Loves reading reviews and interacting with new readers/fans, so don’t be afraid to befriend and/or get in touch with her.

The anthologies I am part of, even my stories may not be acceptable for teens, so make sure to check the ratings of anthologies if looking to get them for teens.

Adults, I prefer writing clean YA/NA. I can write make-out scenes as far as anthologies or possible co-writings may go.

Please keep these in mind going forward, since I don’t want any of my fans blind-sided by a descriptive make-out session within a story or anthology the is not rated PG-13 or below.
